Eating Disorder Therapy

Are you struggling with your relationship to food and eating? What about your relationship with your body?

If you’re not sure, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you feel as if food – or your need for control over food – has taken over parts of your life? Perhaps you compulsively obsess over calories, your weight, or the way your body looks.
  • Does your every decision get filtered through your feelings about food or your body?
  • Do you binge or purge?
  • Does the thought of eating out with friends make you anxious or panicky?

If any of these sound like you, please know that you’re not alone and we can help.

For many, disordered eating is a quiet pain with the power to take over your life. It may feel like a voice in your head, influencing your every decision. What’s worse, that voice may try and convince you to blame yourself. With knowledge and proper treatment, however, you can take back control of your life.

Your eating disorder might be a symptom of something deeper

In fact, eating disorders often stem from a deeper emotional or psychological concern. Trauma, loss, cultural pressure, or low self-esteem might be at the root of your experience. Eating disorder counseling is effective not just because it can help you better understand your relationship to eating and dieting, but because it also helps to treat the causes that lie beneath the surface.

Better Life is highly specialized in eating disorder treatment, and by finding your way to us, you’ve taken the first big step towards recovery.

You’re Not Struggling Alone

Eating disorders thrive in secrecy: for as tortured as you may feel by your pain, you likely also have an urge to hide it from the people in your life, especially those closest to you. This is sadly how most other people with ED experience it as well, and it’s rarely discussed in public. The truth is, however, that you’re not alone. Not at all.

Eating Disorders: The Statistics

Eating disorders, like so many other mental health disorders, are only just beginning to be fully understood. What we’re learning, however, is startling: 9% of Americans – that is, 28.8 million people – will develop an eating disorder at some point in their life.

Further, we now know that eating disorders come in many different forms. While ED was once considered to be vanity-driven or personal choice, modern research has come to understand that it encompasses a whole universe of possible experiences. For instance, your health may struggle because you’re overweight, or because you’ve been told by your doctor that your BMI is “unhealthy,” even if your weight is perfectly healthy for your body size (and trust us, though, we can tell you all about how BMI is a ridiculous and old-fashioned way of measuring our bodies).

A Shared Struggle

An eating disorder once you all to itself, and can isolate you from your friends and family. It saps your energy, wraps you in shame, and leaves you feeling truly awful about yourself. At its worst, it can lead to depression, anxiety, and even obsessive-compulsive behaviors. You may hate going out, and might struggle to enjoy yourself. At its worst, it may even make you feel suicidal.

Does any of this sound like your experience?

If so, please try to remember that tens of millions of other Americans are experiencing the very same thing. That doesn’t mean it can’t be beat, though. By working with a therapist, you’re giving yourself a chance for recovery. With effective counseling, you can begin to take back your health, your life, and your happiness.

“We believe in treating you the person, not just your eating disorder.”

Eating Disorder Therapy Is Your Chance for Recovery

It’s worth mentioning that there’s no perfect formula, and treatment often takes time. There will be good days, there will be great days, and – sometimes – there will be tough days. That’s why we’re in it with you for the long haul, and we’re excited to get to know you along the way.

We don’t treat eating disorders all on their own. Rather, we’ll work with you in a safe, compassionate, and curious way to identify and address whatever lies at the root of your eating disorder. An eating disorder is not a choice, and it may very well be grounded in anything from personal trauma, stress, relationship troubles, family or social pressure, or simply genetic factors beyond your control. Whatever the case may be, we believe in treating you the person, not just your eating disorder.

How do we do it?

Before we tell you about our plan for treating your eating disorder, we owe you some real talk: there’s no perfect formula, and it often takes time. There will be good days, there will be great days, and – sometimes – there will be tough days. That’s why we’re in it with you for the long haul, and we’re excited to get to know you along the way.

What we can promise is that we’ll take the time to get to know you and hear your story before creating a treatment plan. Eating disorder counseling begins, first and foremost, with listening. This is how we can guarantee your therapy will be yours and yours alone. No two people are the same, and your therapy will be a custom, personal experience tailor-fit just for you.

Our therapists treat disordered eating with a wide variety of techniques and modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Trauma-Informed techniques (among others). Because every person is different, we take great care in deciding how to approach your individual therapy: what works for you may not work for someone else. We know we’re not the only expert in the room, because we know that no one knows you better than yourself. Therapy is a partnership, and you playing equal role and setting the path for your recovery.

Therapy is a private, personal experience, and we want to meet you where you are. We have three offices around the Denver metro where you can come and sit with your therapist in a warm, welcoming, and judgement-free environment. And if you prefer the comfort of home, every Better Life therapist is available for virtual sessions – even your very first.

Better Life specializes in eating disorders.

Better life treats, eating disorders with a special focus. We have some of the most specialized, experienced eating disorder therapists in Denver, and our team is always growing their skills.

A significant number of our therapists have prior experience treating acute eating disorders at inpatient treatment centers, and we’re always seeking out the latest research and training to make sure we’re providing the best possible care. We take your therapy very, very seriously.

While we’re good at what we do, we also know when it’s time to get you the extra help you need. If additional healthcare is needed – be it a nutritionist or more intensive program – we can, with your consent, provide you a referral for and collaborate with other providers.

If you still have concerns, we don’t blame you – we know this isn’t easy!

We know this isn’t easy, and we especially know how hard it is to take the first step. Give us a chance to help!

We take a warm, empathetic approach that respects your personal story and makes space for you to be vulnerable. Therapy doesn’t really work otherwise! If you haven’t been in therapy before, it might feel strange at first to share so much, or be so vulnerable with someone. But that’s why we’re here – to give you our undivided attention and listen.

We want to help. And if you’re worried the shame might feel overwhelming, then we’ll talk through it together and move at your own pace. You’re in control.

Your therapy happens in a safe, protected space. What you share with your therapist stays with your therapist, and everything you discuss is protected by patient privacy laws and by our own ethical codes of conduct.

You’ve taken the first big step just by coming here. Now let’s get you the help you need.

Send us a note or give us a call, we’re around. Our expert scheduling team can connect you with a Better Life therapist best suited for your particular concerns, and we’re able to schedule most folks for their first session within a week or two.

Our hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 6:00pm MT. If you don’t get us on the first try, please know that we respond to every single inquiry we receive, and almost always within one business day.
